REYNARD

The survival of Reynard

Hi, my name is Nigel, and I am the author of “The Survival of Reynard”.

I am a blind author having lost the use of my eyesight in 2014 after both of my eyes filled with blood and destroyed both of my retinae rendering me completely blind.

As you can imagine, I was devastated when it happened for many reasons, as I could no longer drive my car, go to work, watch TV, or even put toothpaste on my toothbrush.

I felt useless and lost in a world where everything I knew and had done required eyesight, and quite honestly, I was suicidal!!.

Then I was talking to my local councillor, who asked me if I had been in the British army previously; I replied “yes”.

He then replied, “Good, then you are eligible to join the Blind Veterans Association, which will retrain you as a blind veteran”.

To cut a long story short, the BVA came to my home, took me to one of their facilities, taught me how to live as a blind person, and gave me the skills to use technology by sound.

It’ll sound very simple now, but at that time it was a massive learning curve for me, aided by the staff of the BVA to whom I owe a huge debt of gratitude for the kindness and support they gave to me and not forgetting Simon Labbets, who introduced me to them in the first instance.

Now having learned a lot of new skills, I was able to go on and hone my skills in many different ways, and one of those was to have the confidence to write a book, which I decided should firstly include our general countryside and wildlife habitat, which is under constant pressure from the human race.

So one of the animals that is under constant threat in the UK is the red fox, because it is not always everyone’s favourite animal but I prefer to think that all wildlife is precious, plus as a child I found a fox cub alone in a hedge and I took it home and raised it on dog meat until it was old eneogh to look after itself and I released it back into the wild again.

This is why, when I wrote my book, I turned it into a story about a fox called Reynard, the name I gave to the cub I rescued.

I do include lots of facts from history; for instance, did you know there was a time in British history when rabbits were kept only for the wealthy gentry, and that if anyone else was caught with a rabbit, they were arrested and sent to a penal colony in Australia for seven years.

That is just one of the many facts that I have included in my book, which was written prior to fox hunting being banned in the United Kingdom.

I hope that you elect to get a hardback copy of my book using one of the links below and enjoy what I have written:
